Burnin' Down the House

Apparently it's become the policy of the Flint Fire Department to just let abandon houses burn. Oddly enough though they kept the abandoned homes on either side of the house from catching fire.

This was the first proper fire I've ever shot, and it was interesting, but Stewart was already there so none of it ran. Not that my stuff is really excellent anyway.

Mixed feelings

A teenage boy here in Flint was severely injured in a hit-and-run accident two weeks ago. They still haven't found the driver, but this is a candle light vigil held my a friend of the family for the boy. I had a hard time covering this for obvious reasons, but on the other hand I really feel that this could make a difference; several of these people told me they feel like nobody cares about them because they live in a less than affluent area and that they really appreciated the coverage because they wanted to bring attention to issues like this. I was hoping that maybe somebody would see this and phone in a tip that leads to the slime ball's arrest. Too bad it didn't run.

Work it out

This is just a feature on a gym in the Flint area. This guy was awesome.

Small Town Homecoming

This is a set of photos from my take of a local town's high school homecoming parade and football game. I like the frames individually, but together they all seem to have been shot the same way. I'm really trying to slow myself down and spend more time with my subject; I'm trying to go the fewer pictures route. I'm not sure if it's working.

Light

This is another feature hunt from Flint (city of.) I found these two women braiding their hair and really like the light. Not much of a moment, but I love these quiet settings. Sometimes it's nice to focus on people when they're least exciting, but most themselves.

Sliver Fox

This man was part of a band that performed at a local senior center. I hope that I'm as chill as this guy if and when I hit my golden years stride.

I love color

This is my first stab at an illustration at The Journal, and my first in at least a year. I'm not crazy about it, but I do like the color. The description of the story I was given to go off of was, "This is a story about frozen pizza." Ha.

Going Flat

The Applefest is my favorite festival of the year. When I was a kid it was one of the best weekends in the fall, a time when our drab little town was temporarily filled with excitement and pumped full of life. Today I shot it, which was a different experience. I've got plenty of other images, the flat ones were what I liked best. Here are two of my favorites. Cheers. . .

Caterpiller Arse

Things are nuts here today, but fortunately I can still find the time to enjoy an image of a little girl crawling out the butt of a giant, inflatable caterpillar at her church potluck. It's the simple things in life that get me.

bonne chance

This is a shot from an assignment of a veteren receiving an award. I had all of twenty minuets to make something happen, and here's what I've got to show:

Lance Cpl. Daniel Vela, 21, pauses just before entering the UAW Local 599 hall to receive an award from the union for his service in Iraq Sunday morning in Flint. Vela helped stop two trucks caring bombs from entering a camp of soldiers, possibly saving dozens of lives. Vela's uncle is a member of Local 599, who presented him with a shadowbox for his flag and medals.

Frustration

This was me just trying to make something out of a bunch of people selling stuff in an arena. I think it was okay for the situation, but my head just doesn't seem to be in the right place to make better pictures. I know I'm better than this, now if I could only prove it. . .

Middle America

This is an outtake from yesterday's feature hunt. Oh suberbia.

Features

This is a tornado feature I shot in my home town. The roof was caved in just out of sight, but I ended up standing on the broken rafters anyway.

the start. . .

So this is my first foray into blogging. . . here's hoping it goes well. I think I'll start with some stuff I shot today. The first one is a restaurant feature and the second two are just some found fun I had beneath the overpass of a highway. Hope you enjoy.
