Maybe rather than trying to play with light and composition so much I should just focus on getting better moments. This one is from a story about a little girl who is collecting money for the Ronald McDonald House because that's where her friend (the boy pictured here) and his mom stayed when he had numerous surgeries.
You should always take chances. You will keep learning that way. A really great photo is one that incorporates all the elements, so be patient and it'll come.
